For a while now, I have wanted to try medium format film cameras. In an attempt not to spend too much money, I bought a used Flexaret V, a camera manufactured in Czechoslovakia between 1939 – 1971. My particular copy is roughly 65 years old and in reasonable condition given its age. I tested it out in my neighbourhood and was surprised how smooth the operation was, once you knew this model’s particular quirks. The viewfinder isn’t great, but it’s a lot of fun! Having shot only 24x36mm and “regular” digital cameras before, I was surprised to find out that these cameras shoot a square 6×6 picture by design – nearly a century before Instagram. Unfortunately, I am somewhat underwhelmed with the pictures, even if they have a certain nostalgic look to them. I wonder if I focused incorrectly, or if the sharpness is simply bad on this particular lens. I guess I will shoot one more roll to find out.
